I recently learned an important lesson about diversifying my genealogical research. Databases all have their own particular quirks and transcriptions of microfilms can vary widely. For instance, errors made while transcribing documents, as well as the widespread practice of misspelling the foreign sounding names of newly arrived immigrants in North America have resulted in variations in the spelling of certain family names. My great grandfather's name varied from census to census: Angerbauer (1880, USA), Angarbanr (1900, USA) and Angerbaur (1916, Canada).

I had been using Ancestry.com for the last couple of months and felt like I had reached a standstill. I decided to try FamilySearch, which is affiliated to the Mormon Church. Unlike Ancestry.com, which requires a paid subscription, the FamilySearch site gives free access to transcriptions of the many Canadian records on microfilm.

Surprisingly enough, when I queried their database, it was able to make the phonetic link between Angerbauer and Angesbower, bringing up a birth record in 1897 for a “child Angesbower” in New Jersey. As the date matched that of Frances, the eldest of his daughters, I knew it was a positive match. As censuses only list the head of the household’s family name, I had not previously known the maiden name of my great grandmother. All I knew was that she was born in Canada in 1871, and that she was of Scotch descent. Giving recourse to another genealogy portal proved to be a sound decision. One phonetic association provided me with a vital piece in the puzzle. Mary Angerbauer was born as Mary I. McKay.

McKay - Scottish and northern Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Aodha ‘son of Aodh’, an ancient personal name meaning ‘fire’. Etymologically, this is the same name as McCoy. (Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press) — Ancestry.com

I had previously wondered why Mary Angerbauer had moved to Kincardine from New Jersey without her husband, before settling with him in Winnipeg, Manitoba five years later according to the 1916 Canada Census? Her maiden name partly explained why she was listed in the 1911 Fifth Census of Canada for the Bruce North along with her five daughters: Francis, Ruth, Muriel, Catherine and Keneena. It could be that her parents, who were born in Scotland, were one of the McKay families of the Lewis settlement in Bruce County, Ontario. Whole populations of the Scottish Highlands were expulsed from their lands in the 18th and 19th centuries in what was known as the Highland Clearances. (Wikipedia).

Kincardine was once known as Penetangore from the serpentine river of the same name. Robertson explains that it stems from the Indian name Na-Benem-fan-gaugh, which means ‘the river with the sand on one side”. (p. 429)

A. R. MacKinnon explains how there was a strong concentration of Gaelic speakers from the Isle of Tiree (Scotland’s Inner Hebrides) in Kincardine, but that the largest group of Gaelic speakers was the Lewis Settlement in the neighbouring township of Huron ("Gaelic in the Bruce", 1967). This settlement consisted of families that were evicted from their crofts on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland in the mid 19th century and who immigrated to Canada because they were offered free passage in return for their land. Two shiploads left Stornoway on May 30, 1851 and arrived in Montreal in August 1851. A year later, 109 families settled in the township of Huron in Bruce County according to the Bruce County Genealogical Society.

In The history of the county of Bruce and of the minor municipalities therein (1906), Norman Robertson paints a picture of the hardships that the settlers were confronted with in a new country as Gaelic speakers:

As is elsewhere pointed out, the settlers who first peopled the county of Bruce were, as a whole, of numerous and varied vocations, and in regard to nationality they were pretty thoroughly mixed up. This heterogeneity served a good purpose in the making of the county. Huron Township received at one time, in the fall of 1852, a large group of settlers, sufficient if so allocated to have taken up every lot on three concessions, who differed in every respect from the fore- going. This was the Lewis settlement. It consisted of one hundred and nine families who took up land in the centre of the township. These were all from the Island of Lewis, and had been evicted from their croftings by their landlord, Sir James Matheson. Laboring under the disadvantage of being able to speak English but imperfectly Gaelic being their mother tongue, many, indeed, could speak no other and whose calling was that of sailors or fishermen, they were utterly ignorant of how to set to work to clear up a bush farm, and lacked also the necessary experience how to work it after it had been cleared. In addition to this, being settled close together they had consequently no opportunity to study the object lesson which a native Canadian backwoodsman in his daily task of chopping, logging and ploughing would have set before them. Is it any wonder, then, when all these circumstances are considered, that the progress of the Lewis settlement was at the first slow.

Robertson includes the McKay family name in a list of early Lewis settlers: Angus McKay and John McKay settled on the 5th concessions, while Malcolm McKay, John McKay, Norman McKay, John MacKay, Angus McKay and Murdoch McKay settled on the 6th concessions. He also mentions a McKay along with other Highland Scotch settlers in the chapter on the Kinkardine township, but he does not go into detail safe to mention a Hector McKay who entered the ministry in the Presbyterian Church. So far, my research has brought up hundreds of Mary McKay’s in Canada alone, which has made the search for her exact birthplace quite difficult.

“There the fact is revealed that of all the townships in the county, Kincardine alone had a smaller population in 1901 than it had in 1861, and 1,651 less than in 1881. “Where has the population gone?” is but a natural question. Ask the Western States and our own Western Provinces. There, in numerous prominent positions, as well as on ranches, farms and mines, are to be found the “Old Boys” of Kincardine Township, with a warm, warm place in their hearts for the place of their birth.” (p.438)

This passage stood out for me thinking back of the westward migrations in my own family history.

My great-grandfather was born in the former Kingdom of Württemberg in 1840, what is known today as the south-western state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany. Joseph Angerbauer's naturalization record indicates that he became a United States citizen on May 31, 1870 and settled in Westchester Co, New York. Census records state his occupation as a labourer.

As I have not yet been able to find his name in ship passenger lists, I wonder if he immigrated to the States illegally? Though he could have emigrated to escape religious persecution, it is perhaps more likely, considering the year, that he left his country to avoid military service because Germany practiced compulsory military conscription at that time. The Franco-Prussian war broke out on July 19, 1870 and ended on May 10, 1871, the result of a conflict between the Second French Empire under Napoleon III and the Kingdom of Prussia. The South German states of Baden, Württemberg and Bavaria joined together with the North German Confederation to aid Prussia. (Wikipedia)

In fact, his name does not surface in the Württemberg Emigration Index, a database compiled by Trudy Schenk, which contains the names of approximately 60,000 persons who applied to leave Germany from Württemberg from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

Yet, surprisingly, I found the Angerbauer surname in the Consolidated Jewish Surname Index on the Avotaynu website; it is included in Lars Menk’s Dictionary of German-Jewish Surnames (Bergenfield, 2005). This dictionary identifies more than 13,000 German-Jewish surnames from pre-World War I Germany, including Baden-Württemberg.

Though I could not find the meaning of the Angerbauer surname, "Anger" is defined by the Dictionary of American Family Names (Oxford University Press) as follows:

South German: a topographic name from Middle High German anger ‘meadow’, ‘village green’.
French and English (of Norman origin): variant of the personal name Angier.
French: variant of the habitational name Angers. (Ancestry.com)

“Bauer’ is defined as German and Jewish (Ashkenazic). It’s said to be a

“status name for a peasant or nickname meaning ‘neighbor’, ‘fellow citizen’, from Middle High German (ge)bur, Middle Low German bur, denoting an occupant of a bur, a small dwelling or building. Compare Old English bur, modern English bower. This word later fell together with Middle High German buwære, an agent noun from Old High German buan ‘to cultivate’, later also (at first in Low German dialects) ‘to build’. The German surname thus has two possible senses: ‘peasant’ and ‘neighbor’, ‘fellow citizen’. The precise meaning of the Jewish surname, which is of later formation, is unclear. AB” (Ancestry.com)

I’ll need to get my hands on the Dictionary of German-Jewish Surnames to further my research.

I’ve been looking for information on my great grandfather for several years now, using free information found online for the most part. I had reached a real standstill. However, when I recently found out in the 1916 Census of the Prairie Provinces that John Angerbaur had emigrated from the United States, I finally decided to subscribe to Ancestry.com.

It was worth it to be able to examine the census sheets for the 1910 United States Federal Census and finally put together the missing pieces. I came across some good leads. For instance, I had been searching for a “John” when I should have been looking for a “Christopher” (John C Angerbauer): there was a discrepancy between 1900 & 1910. Another interesting find: Mary Angerbauer was not only listed in the 1910 Census, she was also listed in the 1900 United States Federal Census though her name had been misspelled as “Angarbanr”. Her husband’s name was also indecipherable: Chris* Angarbanr. The census indicates that he worked as a “Checker & Wrapper” in the retail clothing industry. (In the 1916 Census, John Angerbauer is listed as a Floorwalker —a Floor manager— for a Department store in Winnipeg).

This discrepancy between the two names eventually led me to his father Joseph Angerbauer, a labourer originally from Wurtemburg, Germany. He had settled in North Plainfield, Somerset, New Jersey. His wife Francis was also German (Baden). Her occupation was listed as “keeping house”; they had seven children. Christopher Angerbauer (b. about 1866) and John C Angerbauer (b. about 1867) were both residents of Plainfield, New Jersey. Am I correct in thinking that they are the same person?

I was able to follow the Angerbauer family through a series of censuses: three in the States, and two in Canada. These census sheets were sometimes testament to how simple human error in transcribing information can complicate matters, as the records were rife with spelling mistakes and omissions. A whole other narrative between the lines.

The question remains: Did John Christopher Angerbauer emigrate to Canada in 1911?

Sometimes it’s hard to give “Lake of the Beavers” its due. Knowing it was man-made, the lake was almost never the focus of a hike or bike to the top of the hill; instead, the lookout point on the south side was the destination. And the way the gravel path from the park’s access point on Chemin de la Côtes-des-Neiges curves through the trees to the right, away from the lake—it’s as though the route was designed to discourage visitors from stopping at the lake, leading them onward and upward to the chalet at the lookout point and the tangle of paths around the southwest peak. And yet, if the lake weren’t there, the space would be just another patch of grass, used by pic-nickers, ultimate Frisbee players, and pale, sunbathing hipsters. Towards the end of my eight years in Montreal, I might have started to realize there were parts of the city I hadn’t fully appreciated. One late afternoon in early summer, probably a Sunday, I walked up Peel Street, cut through the little switchback at the base of the mountain, and made my way around the east side to the lake. With a pink and lilac dusk tinting the sky beyond the trees and reflecting off the still surface of the lake, I sat on a bench and watched the other visitors. That time of day, most visitors had already packed up and started down the paths toward their homes. But a few small families and young couples, many of them first generation Canadians/Quebecers, lingered by the lake, speaking to each other in the languages of the countries they’d left not so long ago. They seemed at peace, laughing at each other’s jokes, playing with their children. Did they come often to the lake? Had it come to represent something to them about the new lives they’d chosen to lead? I myself was soon to pack and move away from Montreal, try to fit myself into a new city. Would I find such a place, as these new Canadians had found? And would I appreciate it once I found it?

Was in the mood to doodle. Found an old book cover with intriguing fluid shapes. The effect is very shell-like with its overlapping mussels: Coquille Sladdakavring. Doodling, like sewing, and like cycling long distances now that I think of it, both closes off the world somewhat and opens up an internal space of reflection. Thought of an intriguing experiment. Embed QR Codes (Quick Response Codes) in the tongue rug. Each code on the tongue would easily call up the blog tongue. Will have to play...

Process: Broche à foin

Felt like I was making a sketch but with fabric. In the end, this tongue rug is a simple representation of time spent cycling to various bodies of water over the last decade. Both the creative process and the cycling trips were done in a broche à foin manner: unorganised, confused and largely improvised.

Process: The Vulgar Tongue

My website was used as a source for the expression “tongue rug” on Termium Plus: La banque de données terminologiques et linguistiques du gouvernement du Canada.

I was happy to see this inclusion; that the humble rug was given a little recognition despite what Gordon Campbell describes as its utilitarian nature in The Grove Encyclopaedia of Decorative Arts (2006): "Pieces of fabric, cut with one end rounded, were sewn to a heavy foundation. Starting at the outside edge, each row of ‘tongues’ slightly overlapped the previous one, like tiles on a roof, until the centre was reached. Sometimes the ‘tongues’ were decorated with button-hole stitches." (298) Not sure I agree with the term? Though the object is useful in its capacity to recycle discarded materials, can it not also be an object of beauty ?

Out of curiosity, I searched Termium for other expressions: tongue of air (langue d’air); tongue on a buckle (ardillon); tongue in cheek (pince-sans-rire); tongue clucking (claquement de langue); tongue shaped (linguiforme); tongue and slot fixing (fermeture mâle et femelle); tongue twister (virelangue); and tongue land (langue de terre).

Though I had heard the term langue de terre before, I was not familiar with "tongue land". Looking over my maps, it is the perfect term for certain land formations in Quebec. The Legault Peninsula / Presqu’Île des Legaults (LE-8) does ressemble an emerald tongue jutting out into the water of the Outaouais. Other agricultural areas, such as Angers Bridge (A-9) in Sainte-Marie-Madelaine, Montérégie, Québec, recall the patchwork rug by the ordering of their tongue-like, long narrow strips of land, a result of the seigneurial system that was introduced to Nouvelle France in 1627.

Remnants of the seigneurial system can be seen today in maps and satellite imagery of Quebec, with the characteristic "long lot" (ribbon farm) land system still forming the basic shape of current farm fields and clearings, as well as being reflected in the historic county boundaries along the St. Lawrence River. I also found older expressions in the 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue: A Dictionary of Buckish slang, University Wit, and Pickpocket Eloquence by Francis Grose, which was first published in 1785 as the Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue by Captain Grose. The first edition contained words that were tamed down or edited out in the latter edition. I was able to read both editions online in digitized format (Google), transcribed (Gutenberg Project) and even indexed by keyword.

Throughout the dictionary, the Cant Language is a prevalent term, one that I had not encountered before.

“The Vulgar Tongue consists of two parts; the first is the Cant Language, called sometimes Pedlar’s French, or St. Giles’s Greek; the second, those Burlesque Phrases, Quaint Allusion, and Nick-names for persons, things and places, which from long uninterrupted usage are made classical by prescription.”

The tongue rug, often no bigger than a doormat, was traditionally displayed in the parlour.

The Canadian Oxford Dictionary defines “cant” as a language peculiar to a class, profession or sect; to speak jargon. It’s earlier meaning was of a musical nature, one of intonation and of beggar’s whining, probably from the Anglo-Norman cant, song, singing, from canter, to sing, from Latin cantre. In The Vulgar Tongue, cant is defined in a highly negative way: a CANT is defined as “ an hypocrite, a double tongue pallavering fellow” while CANT language is also known as GIBBERISH, that is, Pedlar’s French or St. Giles’s Greek. CANTERS, or THE CANTING CREW is defined as "thieves, beggars, and gypsies, or any others using the canting lingo".

The dictionary is rife with words of foreign origins , such as CHAPERON, CURTEZAN, CURMUDGEON (“a covetous old fellow, derived according to some, from the French term coeur méchant”), FOGEY ("Old Fogey. A nickname for an invalid soldier: derived from the French word fougeux, fierce or fiery"), and SAUNTERER (an idle, lounging fellow, said to be derived from the French sans terre), to name just a few. At the same time, the French language is considered “an outlandish lingo, a foreign tongue; the parlezvous lingo”. E. Cobham Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (1898) defines “Pedlar’s French” as the slang of the Romany folk. He explains that the word Frenchman was a synonym of foreigner. Anyone who could not speak English was labeled so.

Slang is a vernacular vocabulary that is not generally acceptable in formal usage and can included mundane terms (rain check) to obscure sexual practices. For instance, the dictionary reveals that TWIDDLE DIDDLES is slang for testicles.

“We need not descant on the dangerous impressions that are made on the female mind, by the remarks that fall incidentally from the lips of the brother or servants of a family; and we have before observed, that improper topics can with our assistance be discussed, even before the ladies, without raising a blush on the cheek of modesty. It is impossible that a female should understand the meaning of TWIDDLE DIDDLES or rise from tablet at the mention of BUCKINGER'S BOOT. — Preface, Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1811)

Much of the vernacular vocabulary reflects the racism and prejudices of that time, let alone misogynist sentiments. Many expressions seemed to be used to put someone in their place, to assign them to their correct station in life.

PISS-PROUD. Having a false erection. That old fellow thought he had an erection, but his - was only piss-proud; said of any old fellow who marries a young wife

Other words were used in the same way, to silence. The tongue is invariable female.

CHATTER BOX. One whose tongue runs twelve score to the dozen, a chattering man or woman.
CLACK, a tongue, chiefly applied to women, a simile drawn from the clack of a water mill.
GAB, or GOB, the mouth; gift of the gab, a facility of speech, eloquence, nimble tongued; to blow the gab, to confess, or peach.
GLIB, smooth, slippery; glib tongued, talkative.
POTATO TRAP; the mouth; shut your potato trap, and give your tongue a holiday, i.e. be silent.
PRITTLE PRATTLE, insignificant talk, generally applied to women and children.
QUAIL PIPE, a woman’s tongue.
RED RAG, the tongue; shut up your potatoe trap, and give your red rag a holiday, i.e. shut up your mouth and let your tongue rest […]

Many words such as dowdy and drab, at one time harsh judgments of women, have had their meaning watered down in today’s usage. Other words that were once considered slang have been incorporated into general use such as agog, blab, blast, blubber, bouncer, brat, brazen-faced, budge, buff, carouse, chap, chubby, clan, clout, coax, crone, disgruntled, elbow grease, equipt, eves dropper, feint, fidgets, fumble, gawkey, gingerly, glum, grub, hodge podge, jowl, lingo, lush, pimp, pommel, puny, quandary, quota, rigmarole, scamper, scarce, scoundrel, scraggy, seedy, sham, slang, slouch, smut, smirk, sneering, snicker, snivel, spree, swig, tipsey, wheedle, yelp, etc. However, the meaning of many of these words has shifted with time.

Though of course Twitter took its name from an existing word for bird chatter, it is nonetheless eery to stumble upon such a contemporary word in the world of social media in a dictionary that is more than 200 years old.

TWITTER, all in a twitter, in a fright; twittering is also the note of some small birds, such as the robin, etc.

Process: Stitching Time

Over the summer months, I’ve been stitching tongues on cotton and linen with alpaca wool. I have never had particularly strong sewing skills so it is more of an idea of a tongue rug. Nonetheless, I enjoy the process. This time consuming activity leaves room for recollection, for meditation.

My decision to use words as icons was a good one. While numbering the tongues did not particularly help stir up memories, a few choice words for a waypoint (lucie, gravel, bikinis, camero, heather) invariably brings up the experience like it was yesterday — even 10 years after the first bike trip (LE-3). I use the word experience because not only do I remember the physical environment of this trip — how it was hot and I was annoyed by the flies, how the road was gravely in parts, how there was not much to look at as houses were few and far between — I can also recall my emotional state. I clearly remember my inner thoughts while cycling to my destination: my bruised ego at having to cycle with an old bike with a rusty, rattling chain; the anxiety about the thought that I was going the wrong way; the disappointment that the lake in question was a tourist destination once I reached Lac Legault. I can even remember the line I traced on the map by my passage. More of a scribble than an exact cartographic representation. Ten years from now when I look at the tongues, will the word-icons trigger the same memories?

Did traditional tongue rugs hold similar memories through iconic decoration or the choice of materials (the discarded clothing of loved ones for instance)? In comparison, my tongue rug seems to be more of a template, a blueprint; there is no meaning in the choice of materials nor is there any (sadly) skill or craftsmanship in its making. It is more about the time spent stitching the pieces; the hours spent reflecting on time and place.

UNESCO designated April 18th as the International Day for Monuments and Sites in 1983. Heritage Montreal, in collaboration with ICOMOS Canada, brought together several partners to highlight this year’s theme, the Cultural heritage of water in Montreal. Parks Canada put on a conference about the Lachine Canal National Historic Site at Brasseurs de Montréal. While on the guided tour of the canal and its basins, admittedly a cold and wet experience as it rained buckets the entire time, I discovered that The Canada Jute Company used to occupy the building situated at 1744 William Street, which was built in 1889. Specializing in the making of industrial bags in jute and cotton, The Canada Jute Co. was incorporated in 1882 and amalgamated into The Canadian Bag Company in the 1900s.

The proximity of the Ogilvie Flour Mill on rue des Seigneurs (built in 1890, and later occupied by Montreal Woolen Mills), prompted me to wonder if Canada Jute Co. provided the mill with jute bags for its flour and middling products? A material that is considered a waste product along with the bran, middlings or weatlings (in French, remoulage or issues), is obtained in the commercial wheat milling process and was commonly used to feed livestock as a high-protein supplement.

At first, I wondered if there was a Griffintown connection to my sladdakavring? Did The Canadian Bag Company fabricate the middling bag that is stitched on the back of my tongue rug? Upon further investigation, I realized that it is more plausible that the maker of the rug simply lived on a farm or maintained a small stable on their property because Ogilvie Flour Mills only bought Lake of the Woods Milling Company in 1954, while the tongue rug is dated around 1930. It will be difficult to determine the origin of the rug given that middlings were sold all over Canada and the United States to feed livestock.

When I first settled down in the Sud-Ouest in 2007, I walked the Griffintown and Point St. Charles Heritage Trail to explore the area. Hailing from an industrial city in Northern Ontario, I've always appreciated the singular beauty of 19th & early 20th century industrial architecture. I’ve been walking and biking through Griffintown on a daily basis as I started working at the Board of Montreal Museums Directors.

Curious about the area's architecture, I consulted McGill University's Industrial Architecture of Montreal website. The BMMD building situated at 333 Peel and William was once the garage of the William Dow Brewery Co., built in 1929 by the architect Louis Auguste Amos.

I also recently stumbled upon a heritage study of 55 buildings in Griffintown — residential housing, institutional, commercial and industrial buildings — on the Committee for the Sustainable Redevelopment of Griffintown website. Planification détaillée du secteur Griffintown: analyse du cadre bâti was produced by the consulting firm Patri-Arch (Martin Dubois and Catherine Séguin with David B. Hanna and Atelier B.R.I.C.) for the Bureau du patrimoine de la toponymie et de l’expertise du Service de la mise en valeur du territoire et du patrimoine for the City of Montreal in March 28, 2007. I decided to create a map using the study’s heritage sites as a starting point, in order to find my bearings while on my meanderings to and from work.

It was fascinating to see the transformations over time: from the photos taken during the study's 2006-2007 time period, to the Google Street View photos taken in 2009, to seeing the actual sites now, two years later, on my daily walks. I was frankly relieved to see that all the sites were still in existence with all the construction sites in the area. One of the study's suggestions was to design a series of informational plaques for these heritage buildings, a timely idea especially with all the recent real estate developments; from the well-known landmarks to the more modest dwellings, it is important to remind the passer-by of the varied history of this neighbourhood. The study certainly opened my eyes to the area’s industrial past and the key historical figures who helped shape the community.

I also found G. Scott MacLeod's website The Griffintown Tour, which showcases a series of drawings of key sites in Griffintown, namely Police Station no 7 situated at 219 Young Street. Built in 1875, it is now used as a rehearsal space for the Centaur Theatre Company. I recently enjoyed a guided tour of the building. Urban Occupations Urbaines, in collaboration with the Centaur Theatre and Heritage Montreal presented Alison Loader's Ghosts in the Machine, an inquiry into the death of Mary Gallagher. I was impressed on many levels by this work.

I found the site-specific nature of her work a key component to the multimedia installation. The historical signification of the building for the Irish population at the time and the "residue" of a 135-year-old space added to the experience: the creaking of the floorboards, the smells and the general atmosphere. I appreciated the fact that there were multiple entry points, that is, each person would have a different experience based on their vantage point of the projections; each person, depending on when they entered the installation, would experience the narrative differently as there was no beginning nor end to the audio loops. One was free to creep up to see an image on the cylinder, to walk around the distorted projections or to simply sit down and listen. The imagination of the visitor — his or her ability to fill in the gaps — is another important component of this piece. The image of a nude figure with an axe for example, becomes a skewed image of some sort of animal galloping in a monstrous manner. Closer investigation is needed to determine what one is looking at or what one is hearing as the audio of the three circular areas overlap. The piece is interactive in that it demands work; visitors need to spend time with the installation to put together the pieces, to reassemble the bits of information that they are hearing and seeing. This process of reconstitution mirrors the multiple points of view at the time on the crime (the beheading of Mary Gallagher) as well as the societal biases around women and class that came to corrupt the justice process in finding her killer.

It would be interesting to have a permanent exhibition of Lauder's work in Griffintown much like the Silophone project in the Old Port.

The story is about a stream that ran behind my grandmother's house. As a child I remember walking on a small roughly made bridge that crossed it. I always hesitated however because my mother always made a point to tell me to be very careful when playing by that stream. Years later, my mother told me a story of how she almost drowned in that very stream. She was walking alone near the edge and slipped. Thankfully one of the neighbors was looking out her window and ran to help; she jumped in and saved my mom. I always loved how my grandmother ended that story; the neighbor ripped her stockings in this ordeal and my grandmother had bought her a new pair. Sadly, the stream was filled over in recent years.

Summers swimming up near the University at Laurentian Lake, Sudbury, Ontario

My sisters and I would spend all summer walking between Laurentian Lake and our little suburban enclave where we lived as children. There were 4 of us. And we walked for a mile there and back, spending our day swimming in the sun. We didn't hurry along like we would now as adults. Of course you can't when you are just children, our bodies were still in development.

Walking along an isolated country road is something that children would not be allowed to do nowadays. There was nothing but bush. And drivers would race by from time to time, caught unawares that children were by the roadside. I was the oldest and always slightly worried about any trouble that could potentially appear.

We loved getting to the lake finally, dusty from the walk. If we were hungry, we'd fill up on blueberries and raspberries we saw peaking through the woods at us. Or we would vandalize the food machines at the University. Not that we were old enough to do any real damage besides maybe squeezing a sandwich out (if we were lucky). This is not really a story but more of a memory of a happy childhood spent independent of adults and as part of a sister gang with bonds that last to this day.

Now we are all grown up middle-aged women. Everyone is living in a different city. Some are single and others are married with children. There is very little time for communication and lots of worries about money and jobs and children. I have worries for the future — what will happen to our parents health-wise and how will we react as a unit? Will our sisterhood fall apart when our parents go? Are the bonds from our childhood really as strong as I imagine? Are they just valued memories for some of us?

Jumping in the lake as kids from a rock face seemed reckless but exciting. We knew the lake so well and had the good sense to investigate below the surface of the water beforehand. Free from all cares for that moment in time, we enjoyed each other's company and our natural surroundings. I would love to experience this innocent abandon again with my sisters. I hope our bonds will not be broken in our old age.

Where I lived as a child in Kincardine, Ontario, we were very close to a beach on Lake Huron. The Huron is important to me because it was the first major body of water that I was aware of. Its recession from the shore at the time (getting shallower and shallower each year) eventually made me aware that it had originally been over where my house was abutting a low cliff past the top of our subdivision — so that I became aware of deep time and geology at the tender age of seven.

I had many adventures along the shore — one I remember distinctly was in winter, the ice floes had piled up along the shore very thickly that year and extended out several dozen yards. I made my way out to the outermost floes and literally skipped along at the edge of the ice. This was a joyous act of daring but thinking back on it now I was very lucky.

I decided to follow the same process as the Lapalme map and superimpose multiple generations of Legaults with the respective tongue rug placenames. I started with Roch Legault (Legoff) in Irvillac, France and moved westward.

I remember in my youth swimming in the freezing Canadian lakes in Abitibi. I was surprised how glacial waters, with a habituation phase, could turn mildly warm! Also the stories of how a kid at the daycamp, who had a phobia of water, fell in after his canoe was overturned. The autopsy showed he died of syncope, stopping of the heart from fear, not of drowning.

Corresponding with another person doing genealogical research on the Lapalme family, I found out that we were distant cousins: my great-great-great-grandfather Sigefroi Lapalme (1827) was the brother of his relative, Théophile. While updating my files, I realized that some of my Lapalme waypoints for the tongue rug were situated near my ancestors' birthplaces.

The Lapalmes can be traced back to Martin Janson (1605) in St-Sulpice, Paris, France. I was able to mark thirteen generations on the map. Though my water icons do ressemble Easter eggs somewhat, it still gives me a general idea of the influence of family groupings on toponymy.

In fact, the last waypoint I visited, Lapalme Waterway (LA-3) near L’Assomption, was indeed the birthplace, or at least the residence, of five generations of Lapalmes.

Sigefroi Lapalme had moved to the largely French-speaking agricultural community of Embrun in Eastern Ontario where my grand-father was born two generations later.

I would have matched the placenames and the Lapalme lineage much sooner if it were not for the fact that my computer had been stolen a few years ago. I lost many personal files and even artwork related to the Tongue Rug project. I was devastated at the time, but I eventually just started over. I thought it ironic that I was once again reconstituting missing information — piecing together parts of my family history much like the crafting of a traditional tongue rug.

My Lac Panache is a place I call Heaven. It's a place like no other in this entire world. My fondest memories of childhood were spent there with my family. It's a place that offers comfort, a sense of belonging, of love and beauty. A place I can go to unwind, truly relax, get away from the rush of everyday life. It's a place where you don't need an invitation, food tastes great, the water is BEAUTIFUL, the air is pure, the sauna is purifying and the company wonderful. The one place on this earth I would rather be. And I hope that my daughter will cherish this little bit of Heaven that has been generously shared with us over the years and I'd like to thank Grand-maman for making this beautiful place, a place we have been blessed to call our "camp". Process: Add a tongue to the sladdakavring

Though my adoptive and birth names served as the initial genealogical/geographical names for the tongue rug — all bodies of water and the occasional bridge — I also used two other waypoints that did not share my family names: Lake Panache (PA-1) and Mont-Royal (MO-1). Effectively, a starting-point and an end-point; where I was from, and where I chose to settle. While doing my fieldwork, I also came across a few other waypoints that helped me to situate my “tongues” in a larger map.

Lac-aux-loutres and the Lachine Canal (MO-1)

I had been classifying these new waypoints with the tongues found in the nearest geographical area. Yet it is not obvious that a story about the Lachine canal for example, would be part of the Mont-Royal waypoint. If I want people to submit stories about their own chosen body of water, best to add another tongue. I've started receiving a few stories.

I am interested in how placenames can change over time. How several names for the same body of water can co-exist: a waypoint can have an official name on a map but be referred to by another name in the community. How the meaning of a name can shift depending on the context. Do you have memories of a specific pond, stream, river or lake? Do other bodies of water have special meaning for you?

It was a Sunday in early September of 2006. We could feel the first slight chill in the air but it was still warm enough for picnics, so we went up to the Mountain just in time for a late lunch. We spread our blanket on the grass near the gazebo, so we could still hear the tam tams and had a nice view of the volleyball nets. We had finished our meal of brie, baguette and apples when suddenly a little plane was coming down through the trees over Parc Avenue, heading south. It was completely silent, like an apparition. The wings tipped back and forth as we watched, as though it was trying to steady itself. It was a tense moment as we waited for it to land. There was no way to tell what would happen, if it would land smoothly or not. Miraculously the street was empty - the light across from the statue must have been red. We saw a man running toward the little plane and as it touched down, grabbing one of its wings to try to stop it. This somehow added to the strangeness of it all, watching him run hard to catch the plane and then place himself at the tip of the wing nearest us, running backwards now as he pushed in the opposite direction of the plane's trajectory, like Superman might have done, only with much less effect. It seemed foolish and futile, since who knew what was wrong with the plane, whether it might burst into flames, and trying to stop it manually was like trying to stop a small bus. Eventually he let go and the plane came to a stop a little way further down the road, only slightly sideways. By this time no one was playing drums anymore, or playing Frisbee, they all had run down to the street in amazement, wanting to see who the pilot was and if there were any passengers. We watched as two men and a boy got out on legs we could see were shaking from where we sat. Nobody was hurt and the plane seemed fine aside from an engine that stalled. Eventually the police arrived and cordoned off the area. We had never left our blanket as the scene played out and now we turned away from it towards each other and began recounting the story to ourselves, what we had seen and thought and felt, committing it to memory. Neither of us had a camera.

Il y a sur le Mont-Royal plusieurs ruisseaux que je n'ai personnellement jamais vu. Par contre, mes parents m'amenaient au Lac aux Castors quand j'étais enfant. J'aurais voulu y faire flotter un petit voilier. Ça n'est jamais arrivé. On ne m'en a jamais offert. Nous allions toujours prendre une bouchée au chalet. C'était très agréable.

In a previous blog posting, I had thought that the 1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta had not yet been digitized by Library and Archives Canada. I was mistaken. The 1916 census is indeed in digital format as an image; it is the data itself that has not yet been transcribed.

I was therefore not able to use the database to search for a particular family name, though I was able to search by District Name (Winnipeg Centre) and Number (13). I looked at over 560 individual pages before finding the Angerbaur family in Sub-District Number 17, pages 42 and 43.

I actually enjoyed the long, meditative process. A database can sometime reveal impersonal data, all regulated to the same value or importance. I think back to the beginning of this project:

In an attempt to play with the tension between personal information and what I perceived as potentially ‘cold’ impersonal technologies, I inserted personal identifiers into on-line mapping and database software. In this manner, I found topographical markers throughout Quebec and Sweden, which bear my interwoven family names: my adoptive and birth names. More

These handwritten ledgers on the other hand, are intriguing for their very differences: each set of Sub-District pages reveal unique handwriting styles and the matter itself allows for traces of human activity. Paper and pencil is a forgiving medium and allows for those last minute edits — crossed out words and hastily written notes in the margins. You could also read the formal elements, the patterns created by the various names. That is, you could easily tell if workers populated an area by the telltale grouping of, more often than not, single men, with family names that reveal their widespread origins. In contrast, the listing of large extended families tended to create negative space in the ledgers as the transcriber would not re-transcribe the family name for each member.

From these two censuses, I learned that John Angerbaur (b. 1866) was a Floorwalker, also known as a Floor manager, of a Department store in Winnipeg. He immigrated to Canada via the United States and was the only German-speaking member of his Canadian family. His wife Mary was of Scotch descent and born in Ontario. She bore him five daughters in this province and a son in Winnipeg.

I could see why the transcriber had thought one of the youngest daughters (Kennena) to be “Kerrena” as the handwriting is hard to decipher. If the transcriber had not seen the 1911 Ontario census, they would not have made the connection with Kenennena. Perhaps Kennena’s family shortened her name in the second census to facilitate the pronunciation or spelling?

Will the 1921 Canadian Census shed more light on the Angerbauer/Anberbaur family? Another blogger makes note that the release date might be in two years – 2013. I didn’t know that Statistics Canada cannot open the records for public use through Library and Archives Canada until 92 calendar years have elapsed …

The Maison de la culture Marie-Uguay is presenting the 5th edition of its biennale, Reflets V representing work from 14 artists who live and work in the Sud-Ouest. The exhibition runs from April 7th to May 22nd. The vernissage is today at 5:00 PM. Looking forward to meeting other artists in my neighbourhood and seeing their work.

I recently stumbled upon the Automated Genealogy site, which provides images of the original census pages that were digitized by Library and Archives Canada. This simple and accessible interface supports an incredible volunteer effort. It is both a collaborative database and a transcribing project:

Over the last several years Library and Archives Canada has digitized their microfilms of the original census forms for several of the Canadian censuses and Automated Genealogy has organized volunteers to produce indices to the people enumerated in these censuses. Each project uses simple web forms to allow volunteers to transcribe census data from the images into a database, with the entered data being immediately available on the site. Following transcription further volunteers proofread and make corrections. Anyone with an internet connection can participate as a transcriber, proofreader, or just by submitting corrections as they use the site. — Automated Genealogy

The status of the 1911 census is noted as follows: “Transcription is now complete, proofreading is in progress.”

Years ago, when researching the Angerbauer family name, I had come across the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, Fifth census of Canada (1911) for the Bruce North District in Lower Kincardine, Ontario. I had found a database entry for Mary Angerbauer (b. Oct. 1871) and her five daughters: Francis (b. Oct. 1891), Ruth (b. March 1898), Muriel (b. Dec. 1903), Cathernene (b. Sept. 1904) & Kenennena (b. Nov. 1910). To my delight, I found the Angerbauer clan again in Automated Genealogy.

I pored over each inch of the census sheet, trying to decipher the writing. At 39 years of age, Mary Angerbauer is listed with her daughters Francis (19 years), Ruth (14 years), Muriel (8 years), Cathernene (6 years) and Kenennena (7 months old). The family is of Presbyterian faith and the “Language commonly spoken” is English. All the children can read and write, safe for the youngest. Mary’s “Place of habitation” is Huron Terrace and she has no “Chief occupation or trade”. That is, she did not live on an independent income. According to the Library and Archives Canada site:

Women who performed housework in their own homes, without earning a salary or wages, and who were not employed outside the home, were to have "none" entered under "Chief Occupation or Trade". — Library and Archives Canada

At first I was puzzled by Column #1, which indicates the “Country or place of birth” because it was filled with what I thought were zeroes. The LAC site provided me with the missing information: “Those born in Canada were to be denoted by the proper abbreviation for the province or territory of their birth.” Therefore, the Angerbauer family was born in Ontario. An interesting detail: one could be listed as “born at sea” — an in-between state…

Mary Angerbauer is listed as married, yet there is no listing of the “head of the family”? Neither does it indicate that she is widowed. While the Angerbauer name is of German or Austrian origin, her “Racial or tribal origin” is said to be of Scotch ethnicity while her nationality is listed as Canadian. Perhaps her husband worked in another province at that time? Again, the LAC site helped interpret the data: it notes that transient workers such as members of railroad, construction or mining camps were to be enumerated where found.

The last few columns have no entries. The census sheet ends at column 39. Columns 38 – 41 were reserved for “Infirmities” according to Library and Archives Canada: Blind (38), Deaf and Dumb (39), Crazy or Lunatic (40) and Idiotic or Silly (41).

A simple sheet of paper, and yet the details surrounding “Dwelling House 20” — the Angerbauer household — raises as many questions as it provides answers. It is another census five years later that completes the picture: the 1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Not surprising as Canada's history is in fact a story of migration.

I was actually in Winnipeg not long ago, visiting a friend. We had gone out for lunch in the North End to the famed Alycia’s Restaurant for some hearty Ukrainian fare. We ventured into the cold afterward to try and burn the calories: a blustery walk across the Red River to Glenelm. This neighbourhood was once known for its large congregation of Eastern-European immigrants, due in part to William Hespeler’s (1830-1921) efforts to promote Mennonite settlement in Western Canada.

What I find intriguing about the two documents are the many disparities in the data collected between a five-year period. Perhaps the erroneous information was simply linked to a poor transcription in the earlier census? Yet, realistically, either of the censuses could potentially contain spelling mistakes due to the simple fact of human error. Also, a name change is sometimes an effort to simplify the spelling of a name to ensure a more seamless integration in a new environment. Was the name change from Angerbauer to Angerbaur then a data entry error or a conscious choice?

Three of the daughters’ names are also different in the latter census: Francis becomes Frances, Kenennena is renamed Kerrena and Cathernene is spelled as Catherine. Birth dates also fluctuate: Mary’s birth date changes from 1871 to 1869, Muriel’s birth date is listed as a year earlier and Catherine’s birth date is listed as 1905 instead of 1904. There is an addition to the Angerbauer household: John Angerbaur (b. 1866).

I will plan a visit to Ottawa in the coming months as the 1916 Census has not yet been digitized. It is in microfilm reel format at Library and Archives Canada.

At the start of this project, I had thought that the GPS would be an important aspect of my work process, but it simply became a navigational tool. Instead, I was drawn to social media, because the core of the project is the tongue rug itself, both communication artifact and archive. I’m curious about how people build narratives through crafted objects.

I was recently in Quebec City to give a workshop for the Tweet Pals – Twitosphère project with Metropolis Blue. I took a day to visit a few museums, notably the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Musée de l’Amérique française. Created in 1806 and situated at the historic site of the Séminaire de Québec, it is one of the first museums in Canada. The exhibit on the Augustines religious community (Moi, Augustine… Femme d’action et de prière) did not look intriguing at first glance, but it turned out to be a fascinating history lesson. The museum states that “the Augustines de la Miséricorde de Jésus religious community played a key role in developing Quebec’s healthcare system.” The objects on display from the Monastère des Augustines de l’Hôtel-Dieu de Québec’s collection are a testament to the order's religious devotion, their hospital work and their community service, dating as far back as 1639. The objects are also a window into the daily life of a cloistered community. It was these everyday artifacts that stimulated the artist in me, attracted to archives and ordering systems. I felt like I was on some sort of archaeology expedition, examining a self-contained micro-community — set off from the world and yet embedded within it through the notion of service. Surveying the glass cases filled with these “objects of routine”, I thought of Walser's Jakob von Guten (1909) and the film Institute Benjamenta by the Brothers Quay (1995).

Two displays captured my attention as I entered. One was a series of beads strung together in various forms, dating from the 19th and 20th c, and made of the commonest of materials like olive pits, wood and rolled up paper. They were called “Garland of Virtue” (Chapelet des vertus) and were thought to have been used by members of the order to count the many acts of virtue performed throughout the day. Another series of small wooden “Score Markers” (Plaquette de pointage) from the 19th and 20th c, about the size of a large deck of cards, were called “Game of Virtues”. Reminiscent of cribbage boards, these wooden surfaces were punctured with thirty numbered holes set out in three rows and attached to a string or wire with a wooden peg at the end of it. Each good deed was tallied throughout the day by pegging the respective number.

A handmade “Absenteeism Table” (Tableau indicateur d’absense, 1944) also piqued my curiosity. It was a simple wooden board with two rows of words carved into the surface with a small hole beside each word. A hook was affixed in the middle of the board and attached to it were two strings with a wooden peg tied to the end of each one. In this way, by pegging one of the holes beside a name, the location of a given person could be tracked.

What I found fascinating was the specificity of the list, how all the possible locations were already preconceived. This simple list of words spoke volumes of an ordered and regimented existence. If there were relatively little options of where one could possibly find oneself, ironically, members of the order probably enjoyed more freedom than most women living outside the community at that time. A world of learning was available within their microcosm: administrative duties, university studies, medical research, archives.

There were two names on the board that were supple enough, vague, to give a little wiggling room from these prescribed places: À L’EXTÉRIEUR (the outside) and DE RETOUR-BIENTÔT (back soon).

I decided to create my own tracking-board though it would not localize where I was (absenteeism), nor track any good deeds, but simply, mark where I had been in terms of documenting my Lapalme-Legault-Angerbauer waypoints. Compared to the Augustines’ absenteeism chart, my self-imposed list of placenames has very little constraints; my movements are not hampered safe for logistical complications, such as the lack of a cycling trail, a flat tire, or the remoteness of a location. Yet, if I am free to go where I choose, I am not that naïve to think that we are no longer “tracked” in today’s society. There is a sort of societal surveillance through GPS-enabled smart phones and our own digital traces through social networks.

Object-ness

Through the use of microblogging and the paths traced by my travels, I have crafted a virtual sladdakavring. I thought it would be enough, but suddenly, there is a pressing need for object-ness after months of Web work. Lately, I feel the need to give form to the tongue rug, perhaps to bring the project to a close?

I decided I will explore the tongue rug further based on a series of blog sketches: (1) Blogger Tags Tongue Rug; (2) Twitter #Hashtag Tongue Rug; (3) Google Maps Tongue Rug; and, (4) Sladdakavring.

In January, I worked with Silver Tiger Printing in St-Henri on a set of silk-screened tongues. I wasn’t able to get the series underway in time for Reflets V. I recently received the Five Roses Cook Book that I had ordered online, issued by Lake of the Woods Milling Company Limited, Montreal (1915). To my delight, I found an old newspaper clipping nestled between the pages — thrifty stylewise women… It's as good as finding money in the pocket of an old pair of jeans.

It is this very haphazardness, the possibility of the chance meeting, that I enjoy most about Twitter — be it coming across a tidbit of information, an interesting link, or corresponding with another tweeter.

Tweets in time, fragments of thoughts, questions, flung out like fishing line on the water, floating and undulating with the current, and by chance, catching on to something in the flow — a @mention, a Retweet, a message. The #hashtag, much like a lure, directs conversation. I like the French word mot-clic. Un mot imagé. Not only a way to categorize the tweet, but a call to action. Le mot-clic mène à d’autres fils de conversation.

The twittersphere was abuzz about Twitter turning 5. @NathalieCollard started the thread:

Process: Lake of the Woods Milling Co. Ltd.

My community newspaper, La Voix Pop, has recently started including historical sketches written by Parcs Canada. This week’s edition broached the subject of flour: La farine, ingredient indispensable de l’essor industriel. Flour figures predominantly in the history of the Lachine canal because of the surrounding flourmills such as Ogilvie Flour Mills Co. Ltd. in the Old Port, the Dominion Flour Mills in Saint-Henri, and the St-Lawrence Flour Mills (now known as Robin Hood Multifoods) in Sainte-Cunégonde.

Lake of the Woods Milling Company Ltd.

A detail of note was that the Ogilvie family bought Lake of the Woods Milling Company in 1954, which accounts for one of Montreal’s famous landmarks in the Old Port — the iconic FARINE FIVE ROSES FLOUR. It was renamed in 1977 to FARINE FIVE ROSES because of Quebec’s language laws. Matt Soar’s ongoing art project Farine Five Roses playfully deconstructs and re-imagines Montreal’s beloved sign with Love Letters, Farinagrams and a collective sketching process via Flikr — From Memory.

I chuckled at the disclaimer on his site disassociating itself with the Five Roses brand and the much sought out, out-of-print Five Roses cookbooks. I myself had purchased a copy of Five Roses Cook Book: Being a Manual of Good Recipes (1915) issued by The Lake of the Woods Milling Company: its flour was marketed under the name Five Roses.

I found a few photos on the McCord Museum website, as the mill no longer exists. It burned down in 1967. I was impressed by the McCord's on-line collection: by its intuitive interface, by its ease of navigation, and most importantly, by the Creative Commons license on all their photos. Allowing users to embed the properly attributed photos on their own sites, effectively enables the wide dissemination of an invaluable archive.

Though the Lake of the Woods headquarters were in Winnipeg and Montreal, the milling operations (est. in 1887) were based in Keewatin, Ontario, which is situated on the northern shore of Lake of the Woods, at the eastern extremity of Ontario close to the Manitoba border. According to the Lake of the Woods Museum, at one time, it was considered to be one of the largest milling centres in the British Commonwealth.

Virtual Heritage Winnipeg provides the user with an interactive tour of the Exchange District, declared a National Historic Site in 1997. While the Lake of the Woods building at 212 McDermot Avenue previously served as headquarters for the mill, it now houses the Mayberry Gallery. Built in 1901, the house is an example of Romanesque Revival architecture and boasts impressive red brick facades with sandstone.

The Centre historique de Montréal : Vieux Montréal website is comprised of interactive blueprints of Old Montreal which reveal its rich heritage, history and architecture. In 1915, the Lake of the Woods Milling Company established its headquarters at the intersection of Saint-Sacrement and Saint-Jean. This building is quite unique in its two-tiered structure because the new construction, built in 1909-1910, kept the vestige of the Corn Exchange edifice, which was built in 1865-1866. The architects Ross and MacFarlane preserved the two first original floors and integrated them into their new design. A nice feature of this website is the integration of finely-conceived architectural drawings with the city grid.

I was surprised to find a reference to Lake of the Woods in the Greater Sudbury Historical Database. Sudbury’s Flour Mill area (Moulin à fleur for its resident francophones) is still marked today by the silos made of four-foot thick concrete walls that were built in 1883, the year the Canadian Pacific Railway made its way to Sudbury. According to the Greater Sudbury Libraries and Heritage Museums, the Lake of The Woods Milling Company Ltd. owned the silos. Les amis du Musée du Moulin à fleur are now working to refurbish the Flour Mill silos in an effort to conserve part of Sudbury’s industrial heritage.

I have memories of going to the warehouse beside the silos with my father as a child. His father, Joseph Armand, owned the wholesale business J. A. Lapalme & Sons Ltd. The company still exists today as J. A. Lapalme & Sons though it is now named after my uncle, Joseph Aimé. At the Grand opening of the Flour Mill Museum on October 5, 1974, the Flour Mill Action Committee purchased the Flour Mill Museum from Aimé Lapalme for $1.00.

The artifact as communicative device or interactive tool?

The Greater Sudbury Historical Database describes this educational aid as a “communications artifact”. The Musée de la civilisation in Québec City also describes traditional tongue rugs in its collection as “communication objects”. Does this term mean that the object is a cultural artifact, meaning “anything created by humans which gives information about the culture of its creator and users” (Wikipedia)? Or is it rather an interactive tool, where a human user experiences something while interacting with an object?

I have a tongue rug made up of old suit material hemmed with red & tan fabric onto burlap bags from Lake of the Woods Milling Company Ltd. It is badly worn, but its form is intriguing. The overlapping tongues made up of various materials raise all sorts of questions.

Who made this rug? Was it a mill worker in Winnipeg or Montreal? Could it simply have been a woman who bought middlings (floor sweepings) that were delivered to her home in these large burlap bags? Were the tongues made of used clothing from her own family? Did these bits of fabric hold meaning for her? Could you read the tongues as a narrative? Is it indeed a sort of interactive interface?

Process: Bellevue, Lac Perdu, Otter Lake

Reevaluating my Twitter tongue experiment. I need to readjust. I am not getting much feedback, I think in part because my waypoints are too specific. First of all, how many people have been to these actual waterways and lakes? Second, how many of these people actually use Twitter? Is there an online community interested in toponymy — the study of placenames?

For my next batch of tweets, I will concentrate my efforts on online communities who share interests in specialized areas like mountain climbing, fishing, topography, etc. I may, however, do quite the opposite. While visiting the National Resources of Canada website, it came to me. If I cannot always gather information on the specific, would it not be better to focus on the general? For instance, what is the most common placename in Canada? Turns out it is "Mount Pleasant" with 16 instances.

Bellevue / Bauerman

In 6th position was "Bellevue" (10), the only French placename on the list of 10. Bellevue has special significance to me during my Tongue Rug field trips in Waterton Lakes National Park. Bellevue was a substitute. I was not able to properly situate Mount Bauerman while hiking: once because of the weather, and another time because I was ill prepared to go out hiking on my own. Waterton Park covers a large territory. I was confident to follow known trails on my own, but did not want to venture off the path for fear of encountering grizzlies or cougars. Out of all the waypoints I visited, this was the only time I felt afraid, out of my element.

I told myself it wasn’t just cowardice that influenced my decision to substitute the more accessible Bellevue for Bauerman. It was also an inability to discern one mountain from the other. I could not match the abstract patterns on the topographical map, taken from a top-down vantage point, with the reality of being at ground level, within the landscape. All the peaks blended together into one long mountain range. I was simply disoriented.

The name Bellevue Hill is taken from the French, “Quelle une belle vue,” which means “What a beautiful view”. (Dave Birrell, 50 Roadside Panoramas in the Canadian Rockies, 2000, p. 156).

Though the translation is a little off — it should be “Quelle belle vue” — it is fitting. It is not the view of Bellevue Mountain (often called hill) that is striking, it is the view from Bellevue where one can admire an impressive chain of mountains: Mount Galwey (2377 m), Avion Ridge (2437 m), Mont Anderson, 2652 m), Lost Mountain (2512 m), Mount Blakiston (2910 m), Mount Crandell, (2381 m), Buchanan Ridge (2530 m), Mount Carthew (2636 m), Bertha Peak (2454 m), Mount Alderson (2692 m), and finally, Vimy Peak (2385 m).

Lac Perdu / Lost Lake

The most common topographical feature name in Canada was “Long Lake” (203) with “Lac Long” (164) in 3rd position. Other French placenames included “Lac Rond” (145) in fifth position and “Lac à la Truite” (113) in tenth. I was not surprised to see “Lac Perdu” (101) at number 14, certain that I was not the only hiker to ever have gotten lost on a trip. I had my own memories of a Lost Lake at Waterton Lakes National Park in Southern Alberta.

Summer 2003. I had hiked the Carthew-Alderson-Summit Lakes Trail (19 km) the day before, an exhilarating hike with its pristine air, varied terrain and breathtaking views. For the next day, I chose the Lost Lake via Snowshoe Trail (18 km) because I wanted to photograph two of my waypoints: Bauerman Creek (A-2) and Mount Bauerman (A-3). Mount Bauerman (2377 m) is part of a continuous chain of mountains (Mounts Kootenai Brown, Lost and Anderson) in the Red Rock Canyon area of Waterton Lakes National Park.

I had not planned on visiting Lost Lake; on a whim, I followed a side trail, intrigued by the name. It was a steady climb up before I reached the foot of the lake. A serene place, otherworldly. This kidney-shaped lake was perhaps named because of its isolated, almost protected location nestled below a steep ridge. The name could also have been an association with Lost Peak, a mountain that rises prominently on the far side of the Bauerman Valley along with Mount Bauerman.

At the time, it seemed like an impossible feat to hike Mount Bauerman alone because I did not find much documentation about hiking trails to the summit. Now, I can read hundreds of blog posts that detail and map out that very trip. I am truly amazed by the recent advances in mapping technologies and the proliferation of online community-driven databases like Trailpeak and Protected Planet to mention just a few. Someday I may return to attempt the hike. Or not. For now, I am content exploring these online maps and living vicariously through the feats of other more experienced hikers. I had decided long ago that cycling would be my main means of transportation for the Tongue Rug project.

Otter Lake / Lac-aux-Loutres

Otter Lake was 12th (108) on the list as the most common topographical feature name in Canada. I currently live near the Turcot Yards, where the ancient Otter Lake used to be situated. It was known as “Lac-aux-Loutres” under the French regime: it is mentioned in The Dictionnaire généalogique des familles canadiennes depuis la fondation de la colonie jusqu'à nos jours (Tanguay, 1871) as well as depicted on The Plan of Montreal, with a Map of the Islands & adjoining Country (John Melish, 1815). Considering the fact that First Nations people long used these reed-filled marshlands to hunt for otter, there was no doubt an aboriginal name for this very body of water. I will need to do more reading on the subject.

Process: Penage, Bear, Skimenac and Hüaonjacaronté

I enjoyed reading Sudbury, Rail Town to Regional Capital (Eds C.M. Walker and Ashley Thomson, 1993), a book which spans one hundred years: from the “muddy construction camp for the surveyors and labourers building the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883” to Sudbury’s rejuvenation in the 1980s having surpassed its reputation as a one-industry town. Matt Bray writes of the tense climate that could be felt in this mining town following WWI in the chapter entitled “1910 to 1920”: he describes events leading to a frayed relationship between the normally cooperative English and French communities. The xenophobic undercurrents that prevailed in the postwar era were probably at the root of a

“1919 [town] council decision to reinforce the British image of Sudbury by renaming a number of streets, especially those with German and other “unpronounceable” – mostly French – names; du Caillaud Street, for example, was changed to Howey Drive.” (90)

The name “du Caillaud” refered to Frédéric Romanet du Caillaud, a native of Limoges in France. A mining prospector who had made a series of visits to Sudbury in the early 1900s, Caillaud commissioned the construction of the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes after his wife recovered from an illness in 1907. This memorial shrine is set on a rocky hill behind Van Horne Street with a 20-foot grotto nestling a 6 foot bronze statue of the Virgin Mary engraved with the inscription Regina Gallorum (Queen of the Gauls). This hundred-year-old shrine is still the site of pilgrimages and Marian gatherings today.

The practice of renaming streets often harbours a political bent. The rue de Caullaud/Howie Drive shift spoke of the antagonism that existed at that time between Sudbury’s two largest ethnic communities, the French Roman Catholics and the Protestant English elite.

I wonder if francophones still referred to the street between themselves as “du Caillaud” for a period of time after the official renaming? It was my interest in these often hidden stories that lie behind name changes — the palimpsest of placenames on maps through time — that led me to the creation of the Tongue Rug project. I was curious about how geographical markers can act as repositories for memory, carrying varied meanings and associations for different people.

I found one of the old paper forms that I had distributed during my earlier cycling trips:

With the Tongue Rug project, I researched topographical markers that bear my interwoven family names. I chose bodies of water as the main areas to explore because their interconnected, meandering structures can resemble family relationships. Like a lake forming from an undulating river, like a river running dry and cutting off from another body of water, family ties are never static and are constantly evolving.

I was also drawn to water because of the occasional discrepancy between official names of lakes on maps and the names given to these same lakes by local residents. Just like the name of a landmark can reflect local history the chronology of changes to this name can tell an even bigger story…

I did uncover a few alternate placenames: Penage, Bear, Skimenac and Hüaonjacaronté... A work-in-progress with the Twitter Tongues.

Panache – Penage (PA-1)

The inspiration for this project had been the co-existing names for the same lake in Whitefish, Ontario: Panache and its anglicized equivalent Penage. I wondered if there was also an Ojibwa name for this body of water since a significant portion of Panache Lake lies within Atikameksheng Anishnawbek (Whitefish Lake First Nations).

An interesting aside: Atikameksheng Anishnawbek’s proposal entitled “G’Wiigwaamnaaniin”, which means “Our Homes”, was chosen to participate in the Holme’s Group pilot project “Building Homes and Building Skills” with project planning and development set to start this month.

Bauer – Bear (A-1)

I have yet to document Bauer's Lake in Minburn County, Alberta, but it is most likely named after a family in the area, as there are a few businesses nearby with the same name such as Bauer Auto & Tire LTD. in Mannville. This body of water is also known as Bear Lake, either because there is a significant bear population in the area, or perhaps, because it is a phonetic equivalent to the German word “bauer” which means farmer.

Angers – Skimenac (A-11)

Protected Planet touts itself as the new face of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA). I was impressed with the interactive map and its database — its capacity for collaborative work. I found Angers River in their database because this salmon river had been designated as a protected area by the Québec Ministry of the Environment. While visiting the Cascapédia River Museum during my cycling trip in the Gaspésie, I had discovered that this waypoint was also referred to as “Anglers River” by sport fishermen and “Skimenac River” by the Mi’kmaq community. A provincial salmon fishing brochure also identifies Angers and Skimenac as the same body of water at the confluence of the Cascapédia River.

I wondered though at the spelling of “Skimenac” as I came across a Point Skimenack in New Brunswick (Eskumiinaak in Mi’kmaq) in the book List of Micmac Names of Places, Rivers, Etc., in Nova Scotia compiled by Elizabeth Frame, of Shubenacadie, for the library of the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1892.

Is “Skimenac” or “Skimenack” then the anglicized versions of the Mi’kmaq word “Eskumunaak”? If so, does “Eskimunaak” bring up the Inuit practice of eating raw fish, keeping in mind that this is a salmon river?

In A First Reading Book in the Micmac Language by Silas T. Rand (1875), I also found mention of “Mount Scumunaak” (Eskumunaak). If “Scumunaak” is a version of “Eskumunaak”, then perhaps Skimenac river means “a watching place”? The French spelling (Pointe Escuminiac) would seem to follow this definition: a lookout point.

Lac-à-l'Épaule – Hüaonjacaronté (LE-4/LA-5)

I had documented Lac-à-l'Épaule for its historical significance in terms of Québec's Révolution tranquille and because my two other waypoints were not accessible by bike: Legault Lake and Lapalme Lake in the Lac-Jacques-Cartier, Côte de Beaupré area. According to La toponymie des Hurons-Wendats report put out by the Commission de toponymie du Québec in 2001, the name “Hüaonjacaronté” was used to represent Lac-à-l'Épaule and the whole hydrographic basin surrounding it. This report underlines the importance of First Nations names in Quebec’s history as evidenced in placenames like Canada, Québec, Saguenay, Abitibi, Chicoutimi and Kamouraska which all date from the 17th and 18th centuries. Though the spelling may differ from the original names, many place names in Quebec (and Canada) still retain their Aboriginal roots.

A second hand bookstore find (Illustrated Dictionary of Place Names: United States and Canada, ed. Kelsie B.Harder, 1976), shed light on the meaning of some of these placenames. “Kamouraska” stems from Algonquian and refers to the “rushes on the side of the river.” (266) Also from Algonquian is “Québec” (“where the river narrows”) referring to the geolographic location of Quebec City. The name Quebecq first appeared on Guillaume Levasseur’s map of 1601. (445) “Rimouski” is a Mi’kmaq term that probably means “where there are moose” (459) and Temiscamingue is the French spelling of the Algonquian “Timiskaming” which means “at the place of deep dry river.” (548)

As of yet, I have not found the meaning of the word “Hüaonjacaronté” which first appeared on a map drawn on a piece of birch bark by Chief Nicolas Vincent Tsawenhohi in 1829. The immense hunting territories of the Huron-Wendat people were drawn from memory and would later become known as the Vincent plan.

I'm hoping I may be able to get at some answers by writing a series of tweets with appropriate #hashtags. I will need to do some trend research beforehand.
